About Us
Local Opticians (Optometrists) run by local staff for local people. MKO was founded by Martyn Kemp in 1973. The group has 10 branches in Sheffield & Rotherham and has over 100,000 patients. It is probably the largest independent group of Opticians in South Yorkshire. Over the years MKO’s reputation has grown by providing exceptional quality eyecare; it has the latest eye examination equipment including retinal cameras in several of its branches, and providing quality eyewear at great value prices. MKO has been appointed as a SEIKO Lens specialist at all of its branches. SEIKO lenses represent superb quality and anyone purchasing a pair of spectacles with SEIKO lenses has the opportunity to win a SEIKO watch. All of the branches carry a wide range of spectacle frames including Designer names and most months there is a special offer when you buy a new pair of glasses. All our staff have regular continuing training to ensure the service provided by MKO is second to none. More new patients visit MKO because they have been recommended by somebody than by any other means.

EASY PARKING 9 out of 10 of Martyn Kemp Opticians (MKO) branches are in the suburbs and so parking is very easy. No cost and spaces outside the practices. The Herries Road practice has its own car park at the rear of the premises. The Rotherham town centre shop has meter parking outside and a multi-storey car park within 50 yards. LOYAL STAFF The average length of employment of our staff is over 10 years and several members of staff have put in over 15 and even over 20 years service. All optical assistants have continuing training to keep them up to date with the latest lens & frame technology. Our optometrists are highly qualified and on average only see 10 patients a day – so patients are not rushed and the optometrists have time to do all the extra tests themselves and explain the results. Several of our optometrists have undertaken extra training such that GPs & other optometrists refer patients to them for extra investigative tests to decide whether the patient needs to be referred to the hospital eye service and have been given extra training for “glaucoma refinement referral”; again to decide whether patients with suspected glaucoma require further treatment. EQUIPMENT MKO have several retinal cameras that take digital photos of the back of the eye (the retina). The advantages of these cameras are that the images seen are more magnified than with previous methods and so lesions are less likely to be missed and the images can be stored, making identification of changes easier at subsequent visits. A first for Sheffield was the purchase of an Mpod, which is an instrument that can measure the thickness of the pigment at the back of the eye. It is thought that if this pigment level is low you might be at more risk of getting macular degeneration when you get older. If your pigment is low we can give advice on how to increase it.
