THE MKO ECO RANGE OF SPECTACLE LENSES
Some of the specialised lenses such as Transitions (that go dark in the sun) and high index lenses (which are lenses made of a thinner material to reduce lens thickness) can be more expensive and so in these challenging economic times we at MKO have introduced the ECO (or economy) range of lenses, which are less expensive versions of the specialist lenses.
For example, the ECO photochromic lens is just £41; a mid-index lens with an anti-reflection coating £59; the ECO varifocal £40 and the photochromic varifocal £80.

MULTIFOCAL/VARIFOCAL CONTACT LENSES
Martyn Says: Multifocal contact lenses have been around for quite a few years but personally I have found the vision has never been that good. But there is now a new multifocal contact lens that is to be launched in January 2012 that we at MKO have been allowed to trial before general release and I must say it’s the BEST multifocal contact lens I have tried. With most other multifocal contact lens that I have tried in the past the distance is clear and the reading blurred or vice versa, but with these new ones vision at distance, reading and intermediate, such as computer screens was pretty good. And they are incredibly comfortable. The lenses are made of a material that allows so much oxygen through to your eyes that you can wear them all day, every day and even sleep in them. So if you are a contact lens wearer whose arms aren’t long enough, a varifocal spectacle wearer who wants to have a break from glasses now and again, or somebody who is fed up with separate distance and reading spectacles, or can’t get used to bifocals, why not give these new multifocal contact lenses a try? We are offering a FREE TRIAL of these lenses; a fitting fee of £35 might be required, which will include a follow-up visit and if you decide not to proceed the £35 will be credited against a pair of specs.

CRIZAL FORTE – THE PREMIUM LENS COATING

As seen on TV………….… complete with a 2 YEAR, “NO QUIBBLE” guarantee against lens scratching.
Crizal Forte is a coating applied to lenses that cuts out unwanted reflections; is superbly scratch resistant; won’t smudge if you touch it, and also dust and water repellent.   All this makes it very easy to clean and why it has a 2-year “no quibble” guarantee against scratches.  The anti-reflection property cuts out unwanted reflections from car headlights,  computer screens and overhead lights, giving clearer, more comfortable vision and vastly improving the appearance of your spectacles.  This coating can be applied to all types of lenses.

DIABETIC SCREENING
The Sheffield Diabetic Screening Programme (SDSP) has altered.   Diabetics are now asked to go to the screener to have the back of their eyes (retinas) photographed,  whereas previously a selection of local optometrists, of which we were one as a group, took the photos and sent them to the screeners at the SDSSP to be graded.  We, at MKO, can still dilate your pupils, have a good look at the back of your eyes with another instrument that will give us an even wider picture that the retinal camera can give us.  We do not charge extra for this service; and at selected practices, can still take retinal photographs, for which we make a small charge.

MACUSCOPE
At Martyn Kemp Opticians we now have a Macuscope, which is a revolutionary ophthalmic instrument for measuring the thickness of the pigment that protects the macula, at the back of the eye. Every adult in Sheffield should take an interest in our new piece of equipment because it can predict if a person is likely to be more at risk of developing AMD in middle or old age. The macula is that part of the eye that gives us clear central vision. Macular degeneration is when cells of the macula become damaged by prolonged exposure to ultra-violet or blue light, or by a person’s heavy smoking...

LIFESTYLE LENSES
Is this the end of reading specs?
With the use of mobile phones, computers etc. becoming more frequent, quite often reading specs alone are not sufficient for the different working distances people use.   And it is with this in mind that Lifestyle lenses have been introduced that allow you to see to read at your normal reading distance and to see computer screens or people across a desk without having to take them on or off or change specs. They give a very wide clear area of vision for both reading and computer distances, unlike standard varifocals, which tend to blur slightly at the edges. We at MKO are supplying the SEIKO computer lens, which is anti-reflection coated and made of a thinner material for just an extra £45 per pair.
