The Site for Sore Eyes
DO YOUR EYES FEEL DRY,SORE, GRITTY, HOT OR AS IF THERE IS A FOREIGN BODY IN THERE?
There are glands in your eyelids called the Meibomian glands, which add a fluid to your tears. These glands frequently block up making your tears greasy and leaving your eyes feeling dry and gritty.  This is called Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).

A simple procedure can be undertaken to relieve these symptoms: You place a hot compress over your eyes; this ideally should be an Eye Bag (Click Here for more details) or can be a hot flannel or cotton wool that’s been soaked in hot water that’s been boiled in a kettle and allowed to cool a little.   You then put a finger on your closed eyelids on the nose side and sweep your finger across your top and then bottom lid pressing quite hard. This should unblock your glands and you then wipe your eyes with some impregnated tissues, Supranettes, (Click Here for more details).   This should be done twice a day.  In addition, for more relief we recommend using Systane Balance Eyedrops, four times a day (Click Here for more details).  Once opened the Systane Balance can be used for up to 6 months
After a month you can cut down the number of times you do this, but you may find you will still need to use the hot compress & tissues periodically.

People suffering from rheumatoid arthritis can suffer with dry eyes (Sjogren’s Syndrome) so for these people and others with dry eyes we recommend Systane Ultra Eyedrops (Click Here for more details) and again these drops once opened will last 6 months before disposal.  They can also be used for contact lens wearers with dry eyes, and people whose eyes dry out after prolonged use on a computer.

RED EYE
A painless prickly red eye is probably an inflammation called episcleritis and will go away by itself.  Systane Ultra might soothe any gritty feeling.

A deep red painless eye is probably a burst blood vessel at the front of the eye and again will clear itself within 10 days or so.

A painful red eye always needs immediate examination.  It might be just a foreign body but it could be something more serious that requires attention at the local hospital eye department.
