What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is the name of a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve. Glaucoma can be treated with a simple test, but if it is left unnoticed then it can lead to blindness in some cases.
The most common type is open angle glaucoma, sometimes known as chronic simple glaucoma. This effects around two in every hundred people over the age of 40. The chances of developing this type of glaucoma increases with age.
At MKO we screen for Glaucoma as part of your eye examination, however in some cases we may ask patients to come as see us specifically for this test.
The three main tests for glaucoma screening are:
Examination of the optic nerve at the back of the eyes
Measurement of eye pressures
A visual field test
