At MKO we offer a range of services to suit each of our patients eyecare needs. If you are unsure which service you require or are concerned about your eye health please contact one of our branches where a member of our staff will be happy to help you.
Having an eye examination isn’t just about your eyes, it can tell optometrists a lot about your overall health and help them identify any potential issues such as: high blood pressure, hardening of the arteries, diabetes and more rarely, brain tumours.
Eye examinations include glaucoma screening, however patients may be called specifically for this part of the examination.
For more information on glaucoma and the effects see our article here.
Eye examinations are very important and everyone should have a regular check-up. An eye examination at MKO costs: £25. Book your appointment today
Under the NHS the following groups are exempt from charges:
Children and students under the age of 19
The over 60’s
Glaucoma sufferers and their close relatives over 40 years old
Those receiving Income Support, Job Seekers Allowance, Working Family Tax Credit and Employment & Support Allowance.
Those with exempt certificate (HC2)
Those who require complex lenses
In addition to the standard eye examination MKO offer retinal screening. This is when a retinal camera takes a digital photograph of the back of your eye (your retina). From these images the optometrists can tell a lot about your general health, more so than the standard eye examination. The images from the retinal scan are highly magnified making it easier to identify any small issues. The images can be stored on your file and compared with images from your following appointments. Corporate Eye Examinations
As part of Health and Safety regulations, if you are an employer with employees working for long periods of time on a computer, you must provide eye examinations of request, and special spectacles if needed.
MKO have a portable eye screener which can be brought to your company to screen your employees, free of charge. Any employees who “fail” the screening will be referred to any MKO branch for a full eye examination. Contact us for further information or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
For those who require safety eyewear, MKO have a range of plastic or metal industrial spectacles available at competitive prices for single vision, bifocal and varifocal lenses. For more information please email
Diabetic Eye Examinations (Diabetic Retinopathy)
Diabetic retinopathy is caused by diabetes and is the commonest form of vision loss in older diabetics. In order for the sight threatening changes to be detected early on, and treated before vision is lost, it is essential diabetics have the back of their eye (retina) examined at least once a year. Even those attending screening at the hospital should visit their optometrist annually.
Read more about Diabetic Retinopathy here.
Contact Lens check ups
Contact lens check ups are required at least once a year. Due to recent changes in the law, replacement lenses can only be ordered from prescriptions no older than a year (and less for certain types).
To ensure the continued health of your eyes the check involves:
A vision measurement and a test for power change – in case you require a new prescription
An assessment to check the fit of your lenses
An inspection of the lens
An examination of your cornea (front of the eye)
In addition to the above MKO offer the additional following services:
Age related macular degeneration
Measurement of macular pigment thickness (at selected practices)
Colour vision testing
Coloured overlays for Dyslexic screening
Low Visual Aids
